When Everyone Has an Opinion About Your Anxious Dog

If you have an anxious dog, chances are you’ve heard it all.

“Well, have you tried just leaving them?”
“My dog was like that — they just grew out of it.”
“You’re reinforcing it by being so careful.”

Holiday gatherings tend to bring people together… and with them, a flood of unsolicited advice. And when your dog struggles with anxiety — especially separation anxiety — those comments can feel exhausting, invalidating, or quietly unsettling.

This post isn’t about snapping back, correcting people, or proving anyone wrong. It’s about helping you feel steadier in your decisions — and reminding you why thoughtful, individualized support matters so much for anxious dogs.

Why Anxious Dogs Attract Opinions

Anxiety is visible. It shows up in pacing, vocalizing, clinginess, restlessness, or avoidance. And when people see a dog behaving differently than they expect, it often triggers commentary.

Most of that advice is well-meaning. People draw from:

• their own dog’s experience

• outdated training ideas

• a belief that anxiety is a “phase” or a habit

• or a desire to be helpful, even when they don’t fully understand the situation

The problem isn’t intent — it’s context. Anxiety, and particularly separation anxiety, isn’t a one-size-fits-all issue. What worked for one dog can be deeply unhelpful (or even harmful) for another.

Why “Just Try This” Often Misses the Mark

Separation anxiety and other anxiety-related behaviours are not about stubbornness, dominance, or a lack of boundaries. They’re rooted in how a dog experiences stress, uncertainty, and safety.

Quick advice rarely accounts for:

• your dog’s learning history

• their emotional threshold

• underlying health or stress factors

• what they’ve already tried — often unsuccessfully

That’s why hearing constant suggestions can quietly erode confidence. Even the most thoughtful dog owners start to wonder: Am I overthinking this? Am I making it worse?

You’re Not Overreacting — You’re Paying Attention

One of the hardest parts of living with an anxious dog is learning to trust your observations, even when they don’t align with outside opinions.

You see:

• what helps your dog settle

• what increases stress

• how much effort they’re putting in just to cope

Choosing to support your dog thoughtfully isn’t indulgent. It’s responsive. And that responsiveness is often what allows anxious dogs to make real, sustainable progress over time.

Boundaries Aren’t Rude — They’re Protective

You don’t owe anyone a full explanation of your training plan, your vet conversations, or your dog’s history.

Sometimes the most supportive response is a simple internal one: This advice doesn’t apply to us.

Protecting your dog’s welfare also means protecting your own mental space. Especially during busy seasons, it’s okay to conserve energy and focus on what actually helps your dog feel safer.

Why Individualized Support Matters

Anxious dogs don’t need louder opinions — they need quieter understanding.

Effective separation anxiety work looks at the whole picture:

• the dog in front of you

• the environment they’re navigating

• the emotional load they’re carrying

Progress isn’t always obvious. It’s often subtle, uneven, and deeply personal. That’s why generalized advice can feel so frustrating — and why thoughtful, tailored guidance makes such a difference.

A Gentle Reminder This Season

If you’re navigating comments, questions, or judgment this holiday season, remember this:

You know your dog better than anyone else.
Your care is not the problem.
And choosing compassion over shortcuts is never the wrong call.

If you need steadier ground, professional perspective, or reassurance that you’re not imagining things — that support exists. And it doesn’t require defending yourself at the dinner table.

I have three openings for new separation anxiety clients starting January 2026. You don’t have to navigate this alone — change is possible, and I’m here to help when you’re ready. Let’s chat.
